                  FirstGroup plc - Transaction in Own Shares                   

FirstGroup plc ("the Company") announces that on 29 September 2009 it purchased
from J.P. Morgan Cazenove Limited 300,000 ordinary shares at an average price
of 429.1544 pence per share. The purchased shares will be held as treasury
shares.

The Company intends to hold these shares in treasury to satisfy anticipated
exercises of participants' share options in the Company's Save as You Earn
Scheme.

Following the above purchase, the Company holds 1,235,109 ordinary shares in
treasury and has 480,832,061 ordinary shares in issue (excluding treasury
shares).
