NEW YORK, January 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Elsevier, the leading publisher of medical and scientific literature, announced today that it renewed its publishing partnership with the American College of Cardiology (ACC) (http://www.acc.org), the leading nonprofit medical society in the field of cardiovascular research. The agreement calls for Elsevier to publish the society's flagship journal, Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) ( http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jac), for the next ten years. Also included are the ACC's two specialty journals, JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jacima) and JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/JACINT), both successfully launched by the ACC and Elsevier in 2008. "The ACC requires high standards of service coupled with the market intelligence and research to help us compete most effectively," said Jack Lewin, CEO of the ACC. "Elsevier's collective knowledge, experience, reputation and commitment to publishing quality, plus their vision in helping us launch two new journals in a very competitive market place led us to happily renew this agreement as a long term partnership. Elsevier has published JACC since its inception in 1983. Published weekly, JACC has the highest readership (according to PERQ/HCI research), largest circulation and second highest impact factor (11.054) in its specialty. JACC articles were cited nearly 53,000 times in 2007 and full text article downloads via ACCs CardioSource and Elsevier's ScienceDirect exceeded 6.4 million. An additional 17,000 articles were downloaded for free in developing regions of the world during 2008 through the Research4Life (formerly HINARI) (http://www.research4life.org) information philanthropy program run by the United Nations. "The ACC has been publishing with Elsevier for more than two decades as part of a mutually beneficial relationship neither side has ever taken for granted," said Glen P. Campbell, Senior Vice President and head of Elsevier's US Health Sciences Journals. "Our knowledge of the information needs of both the clinical and academic communities and the excellent reach of ScienceDirect in providing access to the worldwide research community place us in a unique position to help advance and promote the interests of our society partners." The ACC is the world's largest cardiology society with 37,000 members. The College is a leader in the formulation of health policy, standards and guidelines, and is a staunch supporter of cardiovascular research. The ACC also bestows the credential Fellow of the American College of Cardiology upon physicians who meet its stringent qualifications, provides professional education and operates national registries for the measurement and improvement of quality care.
