FLYGLOBESPAN SELECTS ROLLS-ROYCE TRENT 1000
FOR LONG-HAUL EXPANSION
UK low-cost airline, Flyglobespan, has selected the Trent 1000 to power the two
Boeing 787 Dreamliners it is leasing from International Lease Finance
Corporation (ILFC). This is a first-time Trent order from the airline.
The Trent 1000s will be covered by a long-term TotalCare services agreement,
worth $100 million, under which Rolls-Royce will manage engine support and
maintenance on behalf of Flyglobespan for an agreed dollar rate per flying
hour.
The Trent-powered 787s will be delivered from 2010 and will enable the airline
to grow its long-haul route network.
Tom Dalrymple, Chairman of Flyglobespan, said: "We're proud to operate a modern
fleet of aircraft that minimise any environmental impact and we were very
conscious of this when making our engine selection for the 787. The fact that
the Trent 1000 clearly beats all current and proposed environmental legislation
was a deciding factor, especially during a phase when we're expanding our
network."
Dominic Horwood, Director - Boeing Programmes at Rolls-Royce added: "The Trent
1000 was designed to meet the needs of our customers and, supported by
TotalCare, it is the ideal solution for operators that want to minimise
lifecycle costs while maximising revenue opportunities. We're delighted to
welcome Flyglobespan to the expanding Trent family."
The first pair of Trent 1000s has been shipped by Rolls-Royce for installation
on the initial 787. As launch engine for the new Dreamliner, the Trent 1000
will power the aircraft's first flight later this year.
NOTE TO EDITORS:
1. Including the aircraft involved in today's announcement, firm and option
orders have been placed for a total of 180 Trent 1000-powered Boeing 787s
by Air New Zealand, ANA, Icelandair, LOT Polish Airlines, Northwest
Airlines, Blue Panorama, Air China, Monarch and leasing companies, ILFC,
LCAL, Pegasus and CIT.
2. The Trent 1000 is the launch engine on all variants of the Boeing 787. ANA
will begin operating the 787-8 in mid 2008 and will also introduce the
short-range 787-3 in 2010.
3. The Trent 1000 is the fifth member of the Trent family, the first of which
entered service in 1995. By the time it enters service on the 787, the
flying experience accumulated by all previous Trent engines will total
around 35 million hours.
4. Half of the Rolls-Royce civil fleet is covered by TotalCare agreements, and
around 80 per cent of all new Trent orders since 2001 have been accompanied
by TotalCare contracts.
5. TotalCare agreements, tailored for individual operators, offer a range of
services extending to aspects of support such as latest predictive
maintenance, asset and logistics management, as well as repair and
overhaul. TotalCare offers the opportunity to remove uncertainties from
engine management and provides airlines with greater financial confidence
from managing predictable costs.
6. Rolls-Royce is working hard to improve the environmental impact of its
products. Each year Rolls-Royce, in collaboration with its partners,
invests around
£700 million on research and development, two thirds of which has the
objective of reducing the environmental impact of its products. This
technology investment is primarily aimed at reducing noise and emissions.
7. Flyglobespan is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Globespan Group Plc, a
company established in 1974. The airline began flying in April 2002 and now
operates 21 aircraft to a wide range of destinations within Europe, Africa,
Canada and the USA. It is based in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London Stansted.
