EMIRATES PLACES $8.4bn ORDER FOR ROLLS-ROYCE TRENT XWB
Rolls-Royce announced at the Dubai Airshow on 11 November that Emirates Airline
has ordered Trent XWB engines to power up to 120 Airbus A350 XWB aircraft. The
business is potentially worth up to $8.4 billion at list prices, if all options
are exercised, including a long-term TotalCare services agreement.
The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB is currently the only engine available on the A350
XWB family. Emirates has ordered 50 firm A350-900 and 20 A350-1000 aircraft,
with 50 option rights, due for delivery from 2014.
The Trent XWB is the fourth version of the Trent family ordered by Emirates and
will bring its Trent-powered fleet to potentially 175 aircraft. Emirates
operates 29 Airbus A330s powered by the Trent 700, 21 Trent 800-powered Boeing
777s and 10 A340-500s, for which the Trent 500 is the sole engine.
H H Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates
Airline and Group, said: "We are pleased to expand our business with
Rolls-Royce, who will be providing the engines for Emirates' new A350 fleet.
The Trent XWB gives us optimum results in terms of lifecycle costs, performance
and environmental impact. We are relying on, and have confidence in Rolls
Royce's ability to meet our aircraft and operational requirements. We look
forward to working with them throughout the programme."
Sir John Rose, Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce, added: "This order further
develops our important relationship with Emirates and with the Middle East.
"Emirates has become one of the world's largest and most profitable airlines
and we are delighted that Rolls-Royce will continue to be part of this success
story through our involvement in the A350 XWB."
NOTE TO EDITORS:
1. The Trent XWB is available in a range of thrusts from 74,000 to 92,000 lb
and a single engine type will power all versions of the A350 XWB. By the
time the Trent XWB enters service, Trent series engines will have
accumulated more than 75 million flying hours.
2. Final engine configuration and selection of technologies are scheduled to
be completed by mid-2008. The first Trent XWB will be ground tested in
2010. In 2011, the engine will make its maiden flight on a flying test bed,
followed by airworthiness certification and first flight on the A350 XWB in
2012.
3. Rolls-Royce has a growing presence in the Middle East, where it is playing
an important role in the development of the region across all the Group's
sectors - civil aerospace, defence aerospace, marine and energy.
4. The Trent engine family has been ordered by many Middle East customers,
including Qatar, Emirates, Etihad, Alafco and Gulf Air, powering Boeing
777s, A330s, A350 XWBs and A340s. In addition, Etihad will be the first
operator in the region of the Trent-powered A380. The International Aero
Engines V2500 is also operated widely.
5. Rolls-Royce, a world-leading provider of power systems and services for use
on land, at sea and in the air, operates in four global markets - civil
aerospace, defence aerospace, marine and energy. The Group has a broad
customer base comprising 600 airlines, 4,000 corporate and utility aircraft
operators, 160 armed forces, more than 2,000 marine customers and energy
customers in 120 countries.
6. Rolls-Royce is continually improving the environmental impact of its
products. Each year the company, in collaboration with its partners,
invests around £700 million on research and development, two thirds
of which has the objective of reducing the environmental impact of its
products and operations. This technology investment is primarily aimed
at reducing noise and emissions.
