NORTHWEST SELECTS ROLLS-ROYCE TRENT 1000 FOR
ITS BOEING 787s
Northwest Airlines has selected Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines for its new
fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
The order, potentially worth up to $2 billion at list prices, is for installed
and spare engines for 18 firm aircraft, plus up to 18 option aircraft, and
includes a long-term TotalCare maintenance agreement, managed by Rolls-Royce.
Northwest will be the first North American-based airline to introduce the
Boeing 787 into commercial service. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in August
2008.
Mike Terrett, President, Civil Aerospace, Rolls-Royce, said: "The partnership
of the Dreamliner and the Trent 1000 will enable Northwest to grow its
international route network with world-best levels of technical efficiency and
operating economics. This selection marks the beginning of what we hope will be
a long and fruitful relationship between Northwest and Rolls-Royce."
Doug Steenland, president and chief executive officer of Northwest Airlines,
commented, "The Rolls-Royce team worked closely with us to define a solution
that meets Northwest's needs. We are confident the Trent 1000 will deliver
competitive ownership and strong reliability, supported by comprehensive
maintenance service."
Firm orders have now been placed for 70 Trent 1000-powered Boeing 787s.
Previous announcements involved a 50-aircraft order from launch customer ANA
(All Nippon Airways), and two Dreamliners for Air New Zealand.
NOTE TO EDITORS
1. The Trent 1000 is the launch engine for the Boeing 787. It is due to fly
for the first time on the Rolls-Royce flying test bed in the first quarter
of 2007. Certification is scheduled for Summer 2007, shortly before the
787's first flight. The Trent 1000 will enter into service on the 787 with
ANA in mid-2008.
2. The Trent 1000 is the fifth member of the Trent series, the first of which
entered service in 1995. By the time the Trent 1000 flies, previous
versions of the Trent will have accumulated around 35 million flying hours.
3. Risk and revenue sharing partners on the Trent 1000 programme are Carlton
Forge Works, Goodrich Corporation, Hamilton Sundstrand, Industria de Turbo
Propulsores (ITP), Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) and Mitsubishi Heavy
Industries (MHI).
4. TotalCare agreements, tailored for individual customers, offer a range of
services extending to aspects of support such as provision of lease
engines, as well as repair and overhaul. Rolls-Royce takes full
responsibility for care of the engine fleet in return for payment by the
customer of an agreed dollar rate per flying hour.
5. Northwest Airlines is the world's fourth largest airline with hubs at
Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Memphis, Tokyo and Amsterdam, and
approximately 1,600 daily departures.
