THAI ORDERS MORE ROLLS-ROYCE TRENTS FOR FLEET G...

27 January, 2005 THAI ORDERS MORE ROLLS-ROYCE TRENTS FOR FLEET GROWTH Rolls-Royce announced today (27 January) that Thai Airways International (THAI) had placed follow-on orders for two versions of its Trent engine series to power additional Airbus and Boeing widebody jets. The airline has selected the market-leading Trent 800 for six Boeing 777-200ER (extended range) twinjets, and is also adding two latest generation A340 aircraft, which are supplied only with the Trent 500. Nick Devall, Executive Vice President, Customer Business at Rolls-Royce, said: "Thai Airways International was the launch customer for the Trent 800 on the Boeing 777 in 1996 and holds a special place in the story of the Trent family as a standard bearer for Rolls-Royce. THAI's expertise, and an excellent working relationship, has led to a highly successful and reliable Trent operation, and I believe that is reflected in this repeat order." THAI was the launch customer for the Trent 800 on both the -200 and -300 versions of the Boeing 777, and with the introduction of the -200ER the airline will operate every 777 variant powered by Rolls-Royce. Including today's order, its Trent-powered 777 fleet will total 20 aircraft. The addition of one A340-500 and one A340-600 takes THAI's fleet total to ten of the ultra-long-range, four-engined Airbus jets. The airline has also ordered six A380 aircraft for which a choice of engine has yet to be announced, and Nick Devall added: "We believe our new Trent 900 engine, which achieved on-time airworthiness clearance in October last year, would be the perfect, low-risk choice for THAI's operation. It continues to meet, or exceed, all performance targets in testing, and has a high degree of commonality with the rest of the Trent series." The Trent 900, the launch engine on the A380 and the choice of five out of eight operators to date, will power the aircraft's maiden flight in Spring 2005. A total of 46 airlines and leasing companies have placed orders for over 1,900 Trent engines, giving the series a 50 per cent share of the new widebody aircraft sector.
