3i Group plc - appointment of Directors


3i Group plc announces the appointments of Sir Robert Smith and Dr Peter
Mihatsch as non-executive Directors of the Company with effect from 7 September
2004.


Sir Robert Smith (age 60) is currently Chairman of Weir Group plc, Deputy
Chairman and Chairman designate of Scottish & Southern Energy plc, a
non-executive director of Aegon UK plc and Standard Bank Limited and a Board
Trustee of the British Council.  He was formerly a non-executive director of the
Financial Services Authority and of Bank of Scotland plc and Chief Executive of
Morgan Grenfell Asset Management and a member of the Financial Reporting
Council.


Dr Mihatsch (age 63) is currently Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Giesecke
and Devrient, Munich, a globally-operating technology group.  He is also a
member of the Supervisory Boards of Vodafone GmbH, Vodafone D2 GmbH, ARCOR AG
and Alcatel SA.  He was formerly a member of the management boards of Mannesmann
AG, Mannesmann Kienzle GmbH and Chairman of Mannesmann Mobilfunk GmbH.

an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the telecoms industry and of global
technology and German markets in particular.'
