Board Change


The Board of Standard Life plc ('the Company') announces today that Sheelagh Whittaker has been appointed as a non-executive director of the Company with effect from 1 September 2009.


Commenting on the appointment Gerry Grimstone, Chairman of the Company said: 

 

“I am delighted to welcome Sheelagh to the Board. Over her career to date, she has demonstrated significant success at senior executive level in terms of transformation, innovation and leadership. In particular, her international experience, especially of North American markets, will be very beneficial to the Board’s deliberations.”


Following this appointment, the Board of Standard Life plc will comprise three executive directors and seven non-executive directors, including the Chairman.  Regulatory approval for the appointment has been obtained and no other information is required to be disclosed pursuant to paragraph LR 9.6.11R of the Listing Rules of the Financial Services Authority in relation to this announcement.

Biographical Details


Sheelagh Whittaker has spent much of her career in senior executive positions with Electronic Data Systems ('EDS'), retiring as Managing Director, Public Sector Business, EDS UK, Africa and Middle East in November 2005. Prior to joining EDS in 1993, she held executive positions with Canadian Satellite Communications Inc., and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.


She has been a non-executive director of Imperial Oil Limited since 1995 where she chairs the corporate governance and nominations committee. She has also been a member of the European Professional Women's Advisory Board since 2005.  She was a non-executive director of the Royal Bank of Canada Limited from 1993 until 2001.


Sheelagh is also co-chair of the Canadian Government's 'Committee for an Information Infrastructure' and a member of the Canadian Prime Minister's Council on Science and Technology.  She is a member of Maclean's magazine's 'Honour Roll of Outstanding Canadians' and was awarded the title of 'Woman of the Year' by Canadian Women in Radio and Television.
