Anglo American plc Board appoints Sir David Scholey as a deputy chairman and
the senior independent non-executive director.

Anglo  American  announces the appointment of Sir David Scholey  as  a  deputy
chairman and the senior independent non-executive director.

Sir  David,  a former Chairman of S.G. Warburg Group, is a Senior  Adviser  to
Warburg  Dillon Read, a post held since 1997. He is also a Senior  Adviser  to
the  International Finance Corporation in Washington and a former director  of
the Bank of England.

Commenting  on Sir David's appointment, Julian Ogilvie Thompson, Chairman  and
Chief  Executive Officer of Anglo American said: 'We are particularly  pleased
that Sir David has agreed to join the strong team of independent non-executive
directors.  He brings a wealth of international experience which  will  be  of
great benefit to the Board and the shareholders of Anglo American.'

Sir  David Scholey commented: 'I am delighted to join the Anglo American Board
and look forward to contributing to its strategic direction. To ensure that  I
will have sufficient time to devote to the wide scope and important issues  of
Anglo American, and having recently become Chairman of Close Brothers Group, I
shall  be  leaving the Boards of the BBC and   J. Sainsbury plc in  the  early
part of next year.'

The  Board  of  Anglo  American now comprises eight  non-executive  and  seven
executive directors.
