LONDON, 11 March 2003:  Antofagasta plc is pleased to announce that Mr. Ramon
Jara has been appointed a non-executive Director of the Company with immediate
effect.

Mr. Jara is a Partner of Jara, Del Favero & Cia. a Chilean law firm based in
Santiago, and a Director of several Chilean industrial companies.
