BRITISH EMPIRE SECURITIES AND GENERAL TRUST PLC
Performance Commentary
This investment management report relates to performance figures as at 31 October 2008.
Over the month NAV was down 14.2%1. This compares to a decrease of 13.5%2 in the benchmark and a decrease of 10.6%1 for the MSCI World (£) index.
Manager's Comment
Markets continue to fall dramatically as the outlook for the economy deteriorates. Sharp reductions in interest rates have so far had little positive impact on investor sentiment, particularly as lending markets remain clogged.
The discounts on our portfolio companies remain at extremely wide levels and overall valuations appear attractive to us. However, until the pace of deleveraging and forced sales slows, stocks may struggle to find a floor despite the apparently attractive valuation levels. We have been using our cash position to gradually add to stocks.
