BARCLAYS ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM BOARD


Barclays PLC today announces that Peter Jarvis, a non-executive director of
Barclays PLC and Barclays Bank PLC and Chairman of the Barclays Remuneration
Committee, will retire as a director with effect from 30 September 2001.

Sir Nigel Rudd, a non-executive director since 1996, will replace Peter Jarvis
as Chairman of the Barclays Remuneration Committee.

Group Chairman, Sir Peter Middleton, said: 'On behalf of the Board, I would
like to extend our warmest thanks to Peter for the significant contribution he
has made over the years as a member of the Board and as Chairman of our
Remuneration Committee'.
