Barratt wins nine former school sites
in West Scotland for 1,400 new homes worth £185m
Barratt Developments plc has secured nine redundant school sites in
South Lanarkshire, West Scotland, to build almost 1,400 new homes worth more
than £185 million.
The project - one of the largest single regeneration programmes undertaken by
Barratt in recent years - will start next year and run on until 2011.
As part of the scheme, specialist contractors will also be building brand new
replacement schools.
Barratt Group Chief Executive David Pretty said: 'Our West Scotland division is
already one of the largest housing providers in Scotland and this important
partnership project with South Lanarkshire Council will form a major part of its
output going forward for the next five years.
'In common with major population centres across the UK, West Scotland is
undergoing a period of historic renewal and transformation and we're very proud
to be playing a key role in that.'
He added: 'New homes for all sectors of the market, alongside new
state-of-the-art schools, can only be tremendously good news for the South
Lanarkshire area, where new housing is in seriously short supply.'
Disposal of the redundant South Lanarkshire school sites is part of the wider
upgrading and funding of educational facilities in Scotland.
In total, Barratt will build some 1,400 apartments and houses on 85 acres of
former school land, including flats and terraced houses aimed at first-time
buyers and starting at under £100,000. Construction firm Amec will be building
new schools on or near the old sites.
The school sites are Ballerup Primary, Duncanrig High, Hunter High, John Ogilvie
High and St Bride's School, all in East Kilbride; Earnock High and Holy Cross
School, both in Hamilton; Cathkin High, Cambuslang; and Uddingston Grammar,
Uddingston.
In recent months, Barratt has contracted on 58 key new sites across England,
Scotland and Wales to produce over 9,000 new homes with a development value of
£1.5bn.
The South Lanarkshire project is the largest of them, but others include
Whitworth Park in Spennymoor, County Durham, for 800 new homes, and major
brownfield sites in Crayford, Kent (440 homes), Harlow, Essex (530), and
Swansea, South Wales (340).
Last year, Barratt also had an outstanding run of successes, which included
winning a key role in building England's largest new community at Telford,
Shropshire, where the company will provide at least 1,000 homes; in Lancashire,
where a Barratt joint venture is preferred developer for East Central Rochdale
to build around 1,500 new homes; and in West Hendon, north-west London, where it
is working in partnership with Barnet Council and Metropolitan Housing Trust to
transform time-expired estates with 2,000 new homes.
Barratt has also successfully won key planning consents to provide some 6,600
homes with a development value of £1.3bn over the next few years. The largest is
for 750 homes on the former GlaxoSmithKline premises in west London, known as
North Brentford Quarter.
In addition, Barratt has agreed over 30 social housing partnership projects is
recent months, which will provide 1,200 homes with a development value of £142m.
These will be developed in co-operation with local authorities, housing
associations and other bodies to provide housing for rent, shared ownership, key
workers and special needs accommodation.
