MIKE STREET APPOINTED TO BOARD
London, Friday, December 8, 2000: British Airways
today announced the appointment of Mike Street, the
airline's Director for Customer Service and
Operations, as a member of the company's Board. He
will retain his existing management responsibilities
in his new capacity.
Although the appointment is effective immediately, in
line with the company's articles of association, he
will, as a new Board Member, be required to stand for
election by shareholders at the company's next annual
meeting, in July.
Lord Marshall, British Airways Chairman, said: 'Mike
Street has made an immense contribution to British
Airways over many years. I am delighted that he has
agreed to extend this level of contribution at the
very highest level in the company and warmly welcome
his addition to the Board.'
Confirming how delighted he was with the Board's
decision, Chief Executive of British Airways, Rod
Eddington, said: 'I know the Board will benefit from
the inclusion of an additional executive director.
Mike Street, with his wealth of British Airways
experience and the high respect in which he is held
throughout the company, is a perfect choice.'
Notes to editors:
1 Mike Street joined British Airways as a general
trainee on his 16th birthday 37 years ago. He was
appointed Director of Customer Service and Operations
in October 1997 following a reorganisation in which
Customer Service and Operations departments were
integrated. A further reorganisation in September
1999 brought responsibility for overseas customer
service into the department. As such, he leads a team
of 26,000 people - representing almost half the
company's worldwide workforce - including all 13,000
cabin crew, staff working in terminal buildings and
other customer service activities around the world,
including Heathrow and Gatwick, Catering and Customer
Services standards and procedures, and Operations
Control and Delivery.
He had served previously as Director of Operations
and, before that, as Director of Customer Service.
Other posts have included Head of Catering and Head of
Cabin Services. He has worked in addition as an
internal business consultant.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, an
Honorary Fellow of the Management School at Lancaster
University and in his spare time sits as a member of
the Governing Body at Buckinghamshire Chilterns
University College. He is married with two adult
children.
2 Before today's appointment, British Airways had
two Executive Directors on the Board - Chief Executive
Rod Eddington and Chief Financial Officer Derek
Stevens - and nine non-executive directors.
