LETTER TO COMPANY ANNOUNCEMENTS OFFICE
Shareholders of The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited ('BHP') are notified
of the following changes to the Company's Dividend Investment Plan ('DIP') and
Bonus Share Plan ('BSP').
* The Rules of the DIP have been amended, effective from 17 September 1999,
to allow shareholders to lodge a Notice of Election or Variation to
participate in the DIP up to the record date (for the November 1999 dividend,
being 5 November 1999).
* The BSP has automatically suspended under Rule 8(a) of the BSP, with effect
from 17 September 1999.
* The DIP will be suspended following payment of the November 1999 dividend
and with effect from 26 November 1999.
The amended rules of the DIP are available free of charge from the Share
Department at Level 40, BHP Tower, Bourke Place, 600 Bourke Street, Melbourne,
Victoria, 3000, Australia (GPO Box 782J, Melbourne, Victoria, 3001, Australia).
