BT CELLNET RESTRUCTURES PRICING FOR THE MOBILE INTERNET
AGE
BT Cellnet is re-structuring its pricing to take Mobile
Internet to the mass market. From 3 April customers will
be able to choose between Mobile Internet and voice-only
calling plans.
The three post-pay Mobile Internet packages are Net 100,
Net 200, and Net 400. The packages include 100, 200 and
400 minutes which can be used for Internet access via the
Genie Internet portal (www.genie.co.uk) or standard voice
calls to UK landlines or BT Cellnet mobiles.
Peter Erskine, Managing Director of BT Cellnet commented:
'We expect our Mobile Internet sales to overtake
traditional mobile phone sales in the coming months. It
is this belief in the scale of change taking place in our
business that leads us to launch a new calling plan
structure that gives people the choice between a
combination of voice and Mobile Internet and voice only
calls.'
The choice of voice-only call plans will be: My Time 500,
Call 30, Call 120, Call 250 and One Rate 300. The
packages are designed to be straightforward, offer more
inclusive minutes and reductions of up to 50% on standard
call rates.
The new tariffs have been unveiled today to coincide with
the announcement that BT Cellnet will be launching the
UK's first pre-pay Mobile Internet phones. The pre-pay
phones will be available in the high street, and via the
Internet, from Monday 3 April, for £99.99. The Mobile
Internet pre-pay package will include up to 200 free
minutes per month which can be used at the weekend for
standard voice calls and Mobile Internet access. New
customers who connect between 3 April and 30 June 2000
will get double the number of bundled minutes for a period
of three months from the date of purchase. Mobile
Internet calling will be charged at a flat rate of 10p per
minute at all times and voice calls are charged at 30p per
minute at peak times and 5p per minute off-peak.
Post-pay Mobile Internet customers who connect between
3 April and 30 June 2000 will also double their free call
allowance according to which calling plan they are on for
the first three months after purchase.
Peter Erskine adds: 'We have totally restructured our
pricing structure to reflect our view that Mobile Internet
is set to be the key growth sector of our business in
coming months.'
