Capita Symonds signs £30m contract to support new rail system for Dubai
The Capita Group Plc's property and infrastructure consultancy, Capita Symonds,
has signed a contract to provide a range of design and engineering services to
the Dubai Rapid Link consortium appointed to build the new Dubai £1.86 billion
rail system.
The Dubai Rapid Link consortium is comprised of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries who
will lead the contract, with construction being undertaken by JT Metro, a joint
venture of Japan's Obayashi Corporation and Kajima Corporation, and Turkey's
Yapi Merkezi.
Capita Symonds will be responsible for providing all civil, structural,
architectural and mechanical and electrical design to JT Metro. The services
will be undertaken and co-ordinated in the UK with direction from a small
project team based in Dubai. Work has commenced on the project and will generate
revenues to Capita of approximately £30 million over the next four years.
The 69.7km (43.5 mile) metro will be a state-of-the-art driverless system
consisting of two lines crossing Dubai, travelling through a bored tunnel
beneath the central business district and on elevated viaducts through other
parts of the city.
Rod Aldridge, Executive Chairman of Capita commented,
'This is an exciting contract for Capita Symonds, recognising our breadth of
property consultancy expertise and our growing involvement in transport
infrastructure. With cities across the UK and abroad seeking solutions to tackle
traffic congestion and to update and improve traffic infrastructures, we see
this as a key growth market for Capita Symonds and the Capita Group.'
