Carillion plc AGM Statement
Speaking at Carillion's Annual General Meeting today, Chairman Sir Neville Simms
said,
'Given the size and quality of our order book and the strong positions we hold
in all our main markets, which, overall, are expected to grow, I concluded my
2001 Annual Report statement by saying that the Group was in a good position to
deliver further sustainable, profitable growth in 2002 and beyond.
'In the first few months of 2002 we have, as previously reported, had further
successes. In February, we reached financial close on the £190 million
University of Hertfordshire Public Private Partnership project. In March, we
signed agreements to provide facilities management services in the Middle East
and Caribbean potentially worth up to £500 million over the next 10 years. In
April, we secured extensions to rail maintenance contracts worth over £250
million.
'The recent Budget was also favourable for Carillion. The planned increase in
Government spending on the NHS, for whom Carillion is already a leading provider
of Public Private Partnership hospitals as well as non-PPP facilities management
services, will increase the scale and range of opportunities for the private
sector in this very large market. The Budget also confirmed the Government's
commitment to other major investment programmes, including rail and road
transport and defence, which should generate increasing opportunities in markets
where Carillion has strong established positions.
'Therefore, with the benefits of the Group's Business Improvement Programme yet
to come, the outlook for 2002 and beyond continues to be encouraging.
'In the light of the recent tragic accident at Potters Bar, I feel it is
appropriate for me to comment on Carillion Rail, whose activities form a
significant part of the Group's business. Carillion Rail directly employs around
four thousand people and uses only directly employed people to carry out safety
critical inspection and maintenance activities on the rail network.
'Everyone engaged in safety critical work is trained, qualified and certified to
the appropriate technical and safety standards. Carillion Rail has a well
established, ongoing commitment to training and development, which includes the
creation of the Carillion Rail Academy to complement the initiatives being taken
by Railtrack and the SRA, in order to meet the wider needs of the industry for
well qualified people. Carillion Rail is therefore fully committed to working
with Railtrack to deliver the highest standards of safety and quality.'
