Carillion wins building contracts worth £137 million for public and private
sector customers
Support services and construction company Carillion has won three new contracts
in the UK worth approximately £137 million: a £70 million contract for the new
Rolls Building in London, two contracts for the Scottish Prison Service in
Edinburgh worth some £47 million and a contract to provide new offices for the
Welsh Assembly Government in Aberystwyth with a target cost of approximately £20
million.
The new eleven storey Rolls Building in Fetter Lane, will provide new office
accommodation to replace the existing Rolls House, Arnold House and No 8 Bream
Buildings for development manager Delancey Estates. The development is a joint
venture on behalf of funds advised by Delancey and Invista Real Estate
Investment Management and is due for completion in October 2009.
The £20 million contract for the Welsh Assembly Government will provide new
multifunctional offices to accommodate up to 535 staff. The building will
provide predominantly naturally ventilated open plan office space, heating from
biomass boilers, rainwater harvesting, solar panels for hot water, and overall
achieves an excellent BREEAM rating.
The contracts for the Scottish Prison Service (SPS), which have been awarded
under a framework agreement with the SPS, involve the design and construction of
a new 135-prisoner place house block at HMP Edinburgh and a new gate complex,
kitchen, energy centre, prisoner reception, games hall and health centre for HM
Young Offenders Institution Polmont at Falkirk.
Commenting, Carillion Chief Executive, John McDonough, said: 'In line with our
strategy of focusing on high quality projects for key customers we are delighted
to have been appointed as the delivery partner with Delancey and Invista for the
prestigious Rolls Building project in the City of London and to have won further
contracts for the Scottish Prison Service and for the Welsh Assembly Government.
'The contracts for the Rolls Building and Welsh Assembly Government were won
using the two stage tender process, consistent with our strategy of growing
construction margins ahead of revenue through applying our rigorous project
selectivity and risk management criteria.
'The contracts for HM Prison Edinburgh and HM Young Offenders Institution
Polmont were awarded under our long-term framework contract with the Scottish
Prison Service and we look forward to working closely with the SPS to deliver
these new projects, which form part of its ongoing programme to improve prisons
in Scotland.'
Notes to Editors
History of the Rolls Building
The current Rolls House was built in the 1960s to replace Geraldine House, which
was once the offices and printing house for the Daily Mirror. The use of the
name 'Rolls' comes from the 'Rolls House' having been situated at this location,
before becoming later known as the Public Records Office.
