Carillion appointed one of four contractors for Managed Motorways framework worth up to £2bn
Leading UK support services company Carillion has been appointed as one of four framework contractors to deliver the first phase of the Highways Agency's pioneering Managed Motorways programme, which has a value of up to £2bn.
Managed motorway schemes involve the installation of variable speed limits and hard shoulder running to reduce congestion and improve safety during peak periods.
Carillion's selection for this new programme reflects the Group's ability to utilise both its support services and construction capabilities to deliver Managed Motorway projects successfully, having been awarded in 2008 the contract for Phases 1 and 2 of the £96million Birmingham Box Managed Motorways project, which is due for completion in Spring 2011.
The new framework suppliers may also be used to deliver additional schemes to improve capacity and traffic flow that utilise technology to make journey times more reliable, improve safety and provide driver information.
Commenting, Carillion chief executive John McDonough said: "We are delighted to have been selected for this important framework programme, for which we will utilise our core strengths in support services together with our construction capabilities. We look forward to working with the Highways Agency with whom we already have a strong relationship as an established supplier of long-term highway maintenance and other technology services, and to using the experience we have developed from delivering the Birmingham Box Managed Motorways project."
