Carillion statement re Network Rail announcement
Carillion notes this morning's announcement by Network Rail concerning its
intention to take rail maintenance work in-house by September 2004.
Carillion bought its rail maintenance business from the Government in 1996 and
has successfully built this business to its current turnover of £250 million per
annum, a little over 10 per cent of annual Group turnover.
Carillion will be seeking urgent talks with Network Rail and the Government to
clarify its intentions.
In addition to maintenance work for Network Rail, Carillion also carries out
rail renewal projects for Network Rail and construction and maintenance work for
Union Rail on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, together worth around £250 million
per annum. Carillion notes Network Rail's commitment to continuing the
outsourcing of rail renewal projects.
