Costain Joint Venture awarded fifth Crossrail contract
Costain (COST.LN), one of the UK's leading engineering solutions providers, is pleased to announce that in Joint Venture ('the JV') with Skanska, it has been awarded a contract by Crossrail Limited worth approximately £40m in total.
The JV will provide all works associated with the construction and fit out of the intermediate shafts and headhouses* at Eleanor Street and Mile End Park, along with the connecting adits to the main running tunnels. The shafts will provide access for ventilation, maintenance intervention, emergency exit and emergency services access for the operational railway.
This is the fifth contract which a Costain-Skanska JV has won from Crossrail and follows on from the successful delivery of Royal Oak Portal and Pudding Mill Lane portals. Work will commence immediately and is expected to complete in August 2018.
Andrew Wyllie, Chief Executive of Costain, said:
"This contract award is as a result of the successful implementation of our 'Choosing Costain' strategy, in which we focus on winning repeat business with major blue chip customers who are spending and will continue to spend on large scale projects. This is our fifth contract with Crossrail and further contributes to the strength of our order book, of which 90% is repeat business."
Ends
20 June 2012
*A headhouse is the building over the top of the shaft which provides secure access and egress, ensures the shaft is weatherproof and houses the necessary mechanical and electrical equipment.

Notes to Editors
In March 2010, the Costain-Skanska JV was awarded the construction of the Royal Oak Portal by Crossrail as part of its enabling works framework. The contract was the first of the enabling works schemes awarded and is a critical element of the main Crossrail tunnelling works. This was followed in May 2010, by the second enabling works contract to be awarded to joint venture, the construction of the Pudding Mill Lane Portal. The joint venture was awarded its third enabling works contract in March 2011, the advance civil engineering works contract at Bond Street. A fourth contract to construct the Crossrail station at Paddington was awarded in July 2011.
The Costain - Skanska joint venture has a long and successful history of working together.
Recent projects include the Channel Tunnel Rail Link Contract 240, which consisted of two 4.7km long tunnels between Stratford Box and Barrington Road in Newham. The A2/M2 widening project in Kent and the construction of the Golden Jubilee Wing at Kings College Hospital, London, completed in 2000.
