Ray Webster, easyJet Chief Executive, said
'I am pleased to report that trading has been brisk in the first month of 2003
with forward bookings matching our expectations and our overall outlook is
positive. At the end of the first full month of trading since the easyJet
pricing system was introduced, we have already begun to observe the benefit of
applying the system to flights on the Go network with load factors increasing,
but with a corresponding reduction in yields. In line with our previous
statements and intentions, yields are also weaker than at the same point last
year due to the high level of year-on-year growth.
The integration of Go and easyJet continued to proceed ahead of plan in January
and I am particularly pleased that we reached an agreement with BALPA, the
pilots' union, on a harmonised terms and conditions package for our enlarged
pilot group which runs through to April 2004. This agreement is currently being
voted on by our pilots, with a recommendation to accept from our pilot's council
and BALPA, and we expect to have a positive response in the very near future.
In order to scale the management team to reflect another stage in our
development, I am delighted that Ed Winter, previously Director of
Transformation, has accepted the role of Chief Operating Officer on the Group's
operating board. Ed, who brings a wealth of experience to the job, will provide
day-to-day leadership of the team and management of the business. I will focus
on the longer-term strategic development of the airline - particularly, how we
can continue to innovate and improve our business. There is no other change to
Directors' roles and structures.'
1. Represents the number of earned seats flown. Earned seats include
seats that are flown whether or not the passenger turns up because easyJet is a
no-refund airline, and once a flight has departed a no-show customer is
generally not entitled to change flights or seek a refund. Earned seats also
include seats provided for promotional purposes and to staff for business
travel.
2. Represents the number of passengers as a proportion of the number
of seats available for passengers. No weighting of the load factor is carried
out to recognise the effect of varying flight (or 'stage') lengths.
