GAMES WORKSHOP ACQUIRES
US COLLECTIBLE CARD GAMES COMPANY
Games Workshop Group PLC ('Games Workshop' or the 'Company'), the world's
largest and most successful tabletop battle-games company, announces today
that it has purchased 85 per cent. of Sabertooth Games, Inc. ('Sabertooth'),
the US based designer, developer and publisher of Collectible Card Games, for
a consideration of US$3 million payable in cash.
Games Workshop designs, manufactures, distributes and retails tabletop
battle-game systems and associated miniatures. Its products are sold all over
the world. The Company's two core games are based in the medieval world of
Warhammer Fantasy Battles and the dark gothic sci-fi universe of Warhammer
40,000. They are the most successful miniatures battle-games of all time and
have successfully been translated into a number of new genres, including
novels and comics.
In March 2001, Games Workshop granted Sabertooth exclusive worldwide rights to
produce Collectible Card Games based on Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 in a
move to expand the Company's intellectual property even further. Sabertooth
was selected because of its management's keen understanding of Games
Workshop's imagery and proven track record in the Collectible Card Games
market. A further attraction is Sabertooth's recognition of the need to
establish a global presence: its initial game is being launched in eight
languages in more than 20 countries around the world.
Sabertooth was established in 2000 by Bob Watts. He has been in the fantasy
games industry for 25 years. Having worked for Games Workshop's US operation
earlier in his career, Bob already has a good understanding of the Company.
Bob Watts and his team will continue to run Sabertooth from its present base
in Seattle.
Tom Kirby, Chief Executive of Games Workshop, said: 'This is a wonderful
opportunity for Games Workshop to work with a remarkable team of people and
expand into a well established market'
