JEFFREY R IMMELT NAMED PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN-ELECT OF GENERAL ELECTRIC
The General Electric Company announced today that the Board of Directors has
named JEFFREY R IMMELT, 44, GE's President and Chairman-Elect, effective
immediately. Mr Immelt will succeed John F Welch, GE's Chairman and CEO, when
Mr Welch retires at the end of 2001.
Mr Immelt, who has most recently been President and CEO of GE Medical Systems,
was elected to the GE Board of Directors and will serve as a member of the
Corporate Executive Office, along with Mr Welch and Vice Chairmen Dennis D
Dammerman and Robert C Wright.

Since 1997, Mr Immelt has been President and CEO of GE Medical Systems, a $7
billion segment of the General Electric Company. GE Medical Systems,
headquartered in Waukesha, Wisconsin, is the global leader in medical
diagnostic technology and information systems.
He began his career in 1982, and following a brief assignment with Corporate
Marketing, held a series of leadership roles with GE Plastics in sales,
marketing and global product management.
Mr Immelt joined GE Appliances in 1989 as Vice President of Consumer Service,
and in 1991 was named Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Product
Management. He rejoined GE Plastics in 1992 as Vice President & General
Manager of GE Plastics-Americas Commercial Division. A year later, he was
named Vice President & General Manager of GE Plastics Americas.
Mr Immelt holds a B.S. degree in Applied Mathematics from Dartmouth College
and an MBA from Harvard University. He and his wife, Andrea, have one
daughter.
