                     Appointment of new executive director


Gooch & Housego PLC, the specialist manufacturer of optical components and
systems, announces that Mr Peter J. Quinn will be joining the board in an
executive position with effect from today. Peter Quinn will take up the position
of Chief Financial Officer with effect from 2nd January 2008, succeeding Ian
Bayer who retires at the end of the year.

Peter J. Quinn, 51, was Chief Financial and Chief Operations Officer of
SmartDisk Corporation from April 2002 to January 2006. SmartDisk, a NASDAQ
quoted US corporation headquartered in Fort Myers, Florida, USA, is a leading
designer and manufacturer of portable external storage devices and digital
imaging viewing and storage devices. From December 1998 until April 2002
Mr. Quinn served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of
Numerex Corp., a NASDAQ quoted US corporation headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia,
USA involved in data communications technologies.

Prior to that time, Mr. Quinn served as the Chief Financial Officer for Uplink
Security, Inc., a USA based high technology company that was acquired by Numerex
in May 1998. Mr. Quinn trained in Ireland and held a number of financial
management positions there before his move to the United States to join Uplink.

On his return to the UK in 2006 Mr. Quinn worked in the financial services
industry in the Channel Islands.
