GREGGS plc
CHAIRMAN'S AGM STATEMENT
Greggs plc is the UK's leading retailer specialising in sandwiches, savouries
and other bakery products, with a particular focus on takeaway food and
catering. It has over 1,200 retail outlets throughout the UK, trading under the
Greggs and Bakers Oven brands.
At the Annual General Meeting held in Newcastle upon Tyne today, the Chairman
Derek Netherton said:
"The Group has made a satisfactory start to the year, with results to date ahead
of the comparable period in 2003. Growth in like-for-like sales and total sales
continues in line with that reported in March, in spite of the poor weather.
So far this year we have opened 21 shops and have closed 12, including six
unprofitable Bakers Oven units in Scotland. This makes a net addition of nine
shops, so that we are currently trading in a total of 1,240 locations. We
expect to add a net total of 30 shops to our portfolio in the course of 2004.
In an increasingly competitive market place, we continue to emphasise our bakery
heritage as Greggs' key point of difference. Last month we introduced an
updated identity for the Greggs brand, supported by a major media advertising
campaign under the slogan: 'It's the way we bake it that makes it'. Although it
is too early to draw firm conclusions after just three weeks' trading, the
initial consumer response is encouraging.
We look forward to reporting further progress at our interim results
announcement in August."
