                  HSBC AND GRUPO FINANCIERO SERFIN

 HSBC confirms that it has received US$137 million for its 19.9 per
 cent shareholding in Grupo Financiero Serfin from Mexico's
 Institute for the Protection of Bank Savings (IPAB).
 
 Under existing agreements, HSBC's shareholding was transferred to
 the IPAB on 8 May 2000 following the outcome of the auction of
 Grupo Financiero Serfin.
