                            PRE-CLOSE PERIOD UPDATE


At the Annual General Meeting on 30th April 2003, we reported that 'results
to-date were in line with our internal budget targets' for the five months to
31st May 2003; this remains the case.  Performance for the year, which assumes a
continuation of the up-turn in activity we are currently experiencing, remains
consistent with our expectations.

The results for the six months to 30th June 2003 will be announced on Thursday,
28th August 2003.
