Informa Group plc
Pre Close Period Statement
Informa is making a pre close period statement today ahead of its half-year
ending 30 June 2002.
Trading in the first six months is in line with expectations though the business
environment continues to be challenging, with total Group revenue for the first
six months of the year expected to be some 15% below last year. Continuing tight
cost control is helping to offset the weakness in revenue. This position is
consistent with that expressed at the preliminary results announcement in March
and at the AGM in May
Subscription income, which accounted for 32% of Group revenue in 2001 has held
firm, but delegate, sponsorship and advertising income are lower than last year.
Annual events in the Telecoms and Media division have continued to perform
strongly, in particular the 3GSM event held in February and the Bluetooth
Congress 2002 held in June.
The Maritime, Trade and Transport division has been affected the most by the
decrease in advertising revenue, suffering a 14% drop in the first five months
of 2002, as its proportion of income derived from advertising was the highest of
any of our divisions (36% in 2001).
The Law & Tax and Commodities & Energy divisions had a difficult first half but
are expecting to have a better second half with a strong forward programme of
events planned.
The Finance & Insurance division is performing well despite the contraction in
the markets it operates in because a high proportion of its profits derives from
subscription income.
Both conferences and publishing revenue in the Life Sciences division continues
to perform strongly.
