First Refuelling Station Sale in the US
ITM Power (AIM: ITM), the energy storage and clean fuel company, announced today through its new US company, ITM Power Inc., it has received a purchase order from Hydrogen Frontier, Inc. ("HFI") to supply a rapid response electrolyser unit to be integrated into Hyundai's hydrogen energy and fueling station in Chino, Calif.
The award for an electrolyser-based hydrogen refuelling station comes from the California Energy Commission (CEC) which approved the proposal on April 11, 2013. The refueling station will be located at the Hyundai America Technical Center testing facility near the I-10 freeway. The refueling unit, deployed in collaboration with Powertech Labs in Canada, will be capable of generating 100kg/day of hydrogen with the ability to dispense at both 350 and 700bar.
The award for the complete refueling station is US$3 million and was issued under two set asides, namely the 100 percent renewable and non-road categories. This means that the hydrogen will be produced on site as a 100percent renewable fuel, and that the station will dispense hydrogen for public use for fuel cell electric vehicles, and provide hydrogen for Hyundai's Tucson Fuel Cell fleet and fork lifts.
California has a planned schedule of funding and investing in more stations using similar award schemes. These investment are expected to continue on an annual basis in accordance with the California Road Map: The Commercialization of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles. In addition, H2USA an initiative between the global automotive industry, hydrogen fuel suppliers and the US Department of Energy and was announced May 13, 2013. The objective of this initiative is to establish a US road map and plan for the commercial roll-out of fuel cell vehicles across the USA.
As part of the Company's plans to expand its activities on a global basis, ITM Power will establish a permanent staff in the US for ITM Power Inc. ITM Power's Business Development Manager, Stephen Jones, has been appointed Managing Director of ITM Power Inc. and will be working alongside Geoff Budd, ITM Power's existing representative in the United States and Canada to grow the Company's North American activities.
ITM Power Inc. has also appointed two key advisors, Mr Bob Rose and Dr. Alan Lloyd.
Bob Rose has been involved in the fuel cell industry for more than 20 years, and founded the U.S. fuel cell trade association, now part of the US Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association. Previously Bob served in senior communications and policy positions in the U.S. government, and as an advisor to non-profit organizations, the private sector and state and regional organizations in California and elsewhere. Bob has been a member of the U.S. Secretary of Energy's Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technical Advisory Committee since 2007. He has recently been appointed to a committee advising the U.S. Secretary of Commerce on renewable energy export issues.
Alan Lloyd's work focuses on viable future of advanced transportation technology including electric drive and renewable fuels with attention to urban air quality issues and global climate change. Alan is president of The International Council on Clean Transport (ICCT) and a member of the U.S. Secretary of Energy's Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technical Advisory Committee. Prior to joining the ICCT in 2006, Alan served as the Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency from 2004 through February 2006 during which time he chaired the Climate Action Team to implement the governor's greenhouse gas reduction goals. He was Chairman of the California Air Resources Board from 1999 to 2004, during which CARB passed the first greenhouse gas regulation (AB 1493). Before CARB, Alan was the Executive Director of the Energy and Environmental Engineering Centre for the Desert Research Institute at the University and Community College System of Nevada, Reno, and the Chief Scientist at the South Coast Air Quality Management District from 1988 to 1996. He earned both his B.Sc. in Chemistry and Ph.D. in Gas Kinetics at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, U.K.
ITM Power CEO, Dr Graham Cooley, said: "We are delighted to be deploying our first electrolyser unit in California under ITM Power Inc. ITM Power has been well known in California since our IPO on the London Stock Exchange and our presence at many of the hydrogen and fuel cell exhibitions held there over the years. Having made this initial sale for what we believe will be part of a larger series of refuelling stations in California alone, we now have the opportunity to further develop our presence and sales in energy storage and clean fuel products to California and the wider United States as a plant manufacturer and supplier."
