John Lewis Of Hungerford PLC
29 July 2002
John Lewis of Hungerford plc. ('the Company')
In the Interim Statement dated May 15th 2002 the Company announced that terms
had been agreed, subject to contract, for the lease of two new showroom units in
Bristol and London.
In view of the expected downturn in UK retail activity and economic
uncertainties in general, the Directors believe that the terms offered for these
sites are no longer satisfactory. Accordingly the Company will not now be
leasing these units. The Company is however continuing to look for opportunities
to increase the number of its retail showrooms particularly in the London area.
Following a disappointing first half and weak sales in the third quarter, sales
in the fourth quarter of the current financial year to 31 August 2002 are strong
and well above expectations.
