MMC NAMES WILLIAM ROSOFF
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, September 27, 2000 - Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc.
(MMC) announced today that William L. Rosoff has been named senior vice
president and general counsel.
Mr. Rosoff's appointment is effective October 10, 2000. He will report to J.
W. Greenberg, chairman and chief executive officer of MMC.
Mr. Rosoff, age 54, was most recently a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell,
having rejoined the firm after serving for two years as senior vice president
and general counsel of RJR Nabisco, Inc. Mr. Rosoff first joined Davis Polk
in 1978 and became a partner in 1985.
At RJR Nabisco, Mr. Rosoff was a key legal and business advisor to the chief
executive officer and advised the Board of Directors on legal, political and
strategic issues.
During his tenure at Davis Polk, Mr. Rosoff was a partner in both the
litigation and corporate departments, focusing primarily on mergers and
acquisitions. Since returning to the firm this past February, he acted as
lead counsel in the sale of Nabisco to Philip Morris and the sale of Nabisco
Group Holdings to RJ Reynolds Tobacco.
Gregory F. Van Gundy, who has been general counsel since 1979, will continue
as corporate secretary of MMC.

Mr. Rosoff holds a B.A. in history from Columbia University. He earned a
Ph.D. in economic history at the University of California at Berkeley in 1975
and a J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1978. He is a
director of Deltic Timber Corporation.
