THE MERCHANTS TRUST PLC

ISSUE OF SHARES FROM GENERAL BLOCK LISTING

The Company announces that 400,000 ordinary shares of 25p each were issued on 29 April 2009 from the general block listing at a price of 279p per share, representing a premium to net asset value (including accrued income and with debt at market value).

Following this issue of shares the ordinary share capital has increased to 103,213,464 ordinary shares of 25p.
