                       GLEESON WINS £80M WATER BUSINESS

                          AND CONTRACT JOURNAL AWARD


A joint venture between M J Gleeson Group and Thames Water has been awarded
one of four prestigious strategic partnering agreements by West of Scotland
Water. The £100m plus agreement, worth in excess of £80m to Gleeson, will see
the Stirling Water team of Gleeson, Thames Water and Montgomery Watson Harza
working with WoSW to deliver improvements to water and wastewater treatment
works in the south of the WoSW area (which stretches from the Borders to
Argyllshire) over the next two years, with a further two years subject to
performance. The Stirling Water/WoSW team will also work closely with the
other three partnerships to share ideas and solutions.

This award takes Gleeson's water-related order book to £550m. £250m of this is
in Scotland, where Gleeson works for all three water authorities - WoSW, East
of Scotland Water and North of Scotland Water.

Tony Collins, Managing Director of Gleeson's Engineering Division, said
'Following our recent successful completion of the £100m wastewater treatment
scheme for East of Scotland Water at Seafield/Almond Valley and Esk, this is a
tremendous opportunity for the team to deliver WoSW's investment programme and
achieve the required capital efficiencies. We have built our reputation on
teamwork and delivery and I am confident that we will prove the strategic
partnerships to be an effective model for programme delivery.'

On the evening of Thursday 4 October 2001, at the Grosvenor House Hotel in
London, in the Contract Journal Construction Industry Awards 2001, Gleeson
received the award of Civil Engineering Contractor of the Year.

Gleeson will be making its preliminary announcement of results for the year
ended 30 June 2001 on Tuesday 16 October 2001. On that day, there will be
