PRESS RELEASE
16 November 2011 at 9.00 am EET
For the fifth consecutive year Outokumpu has maintained its membership in the
Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) - DJSI World and DJSI Europe. In the
2011 review Outokumpu is one of the five best steel companies worldwide included
in the DJSI World index.
Outokumpu was particularly recognised for its environmental work and ranked #1
in the whole steel industry on the environmental dimension for the second
successive year. Positive feedback was also received in the occupational health
and safety category where Outokumpu obtained the highest scores in the industry.
"We are proud to be recognised as a leader in environmental sustainability. The
results also highlight our long-term commitment to environmental work, and as an
example we have managed to reduce our carbon footprint by 40% since the 1990s,
including a 25% reduction in CO(2) between 2000 and 2010. We also welcome the
recognition for the continuous work we have done in the area of occupational
health and safety", says Mika Seitovirta, CEO of Outokumpu.
The DJSI indexes rank leading companies in the area of sustainable development.
The annual review is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic,
environmental and social performance. The analysis is carried out each year by
an independent assessment party SAM Research AG. DJSI World and DJSI Europe
Indexes include 342 and 172 companies respectively.
Outokumpu's commitment in sustainable development is recognised by several
independent sustainability ratings and corporate responsibility institutions
such as SAM, Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, ETHIbel, SRI, OMX
Sustainability Index and Kempen SRI. Outokumpu was also granted the first
International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) Sustainability award in May 2011.
