Motile Robotics chooses Vicon for USA Army research project
OMG plc, Oxford Metrics Group (LSE: OMG), ("OMG" or "the Group") the technology group providing image understanding products for the entertainment, defence, life science and engineering industries, is pleased to announce that Motile Robotics, Inc., developer of bio-inspired technologies, has purchased a 16 camera T160 Vicon motion capture system with Nexus and Tracker software. The system will be used for a ten year research project tracking multiple Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs), Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) and ground robots as part of the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Micro Autonomous Systems and Technology (MAST) Collaborative Technology Alliance (CTA). The MAST CTA is a research consortium with members from academia, industry, and the US Army.
Motile Robotics will be collaborating on the project with consortium lead BAE Systems, ARL, and the MAST Consortium Members. The project will be managed from Motile Robotics corporate headquarters in Joppa, MD.
The Vicon system will be installed in ARL's Experimentation Centre and will include three areas representing different environments; a jungle, a rough terrain desert and a two story urban dwelling. Motile Robotics chose the Vicon T160 camera for its ability to quickly and accurately monitor the movements of UAVs, MAVs, and ground robots thanks to the 16 megapixel resolution and Gigabit Ethernet connection.
Kenneth Dawson, President of Motile Robotics explains: "We are extremely proud to be involved in a task such as this. By pursuing the advancement of micro and nano technology coupled with state of the art autonomous systems we can help make the next generation of technology safer, cheaper, and more effective. Ultimately, the applications of this research may influence medical device design and capabilities, search and rescue tools, and even battery design."
Douglas Reinke, CEO at Vicon said: "Motile Robotics is a very exciting company and I'm extremely proud Vicon is part of such important research. This project will be instrumental in pushing forward the research and technological development of UAVs and ground robots."
The 16 camera system was installed in March 2010 with plans for the initial kickoff of the experimentation centre in April 2010.
