Ruukki to provide structures for new 400-metre ...
Press release 9 October 2009
Ruukki has signed a contract to deliver and install the steel
structures for a bridge over the Kyrönsalmi strait in Savonlinna,
Finland. The bridge is part of the highway 14 development project.
Ruukki's customer in the project is YIT Construction Ltd.
The new bridge will be built to the south of the existing bridge
spanning the Kyrönsalmi strait. The bridge will be over 400 metres
long and consist of a steel composite girder bridge and a bascule
bridge to allow clearance for shipping.
The high degree of prefabrication of Ruukki's structures together
with carefully planned site operations enable prompt delivery and
help to ensure that the entire bridge is completed to schedule.
"Choosing Ruukki as our partner means we can focus our resources on
implementing this demanding bridge project. Ruukki masters the entire
process from the manufacture of structures to their installation,"
says Pertti Kärkkäinen, who is heading the project at YIT
Construction.
"The large, demanding structures and manufacture and installation of
the bascule bridge that opens to allow shipping to pass are
challenging projects. We can capitalise on our experience from a
number of similar bridge projects in the Nordic countries. The huge
bridge girders will be delivered to the site from our plant in
Ylivieska, Finland. The girders will be joined together to form large
sections ready for installation. These sections will be put into
place to form the load-bearing steel structure of the bridge," says
Sami Eronen, Senior Vice President, Infrastructure and Northern
Europe, Ruukki Construction.
Ruukki will start manufacturing the structures for the Kyrönsalmi
bridge later this year, but most of the work will be done during
2010. The Kyrönsalmi bridge will open to traffic in summer 2011.
Ruukki's earlier bridge construction projects in Finland include the
Isohaara bridge on highway 4 spanning the Kemijoki river and the
Mälkiä canal bridge on highway 6 in Lappeenranta.
