APPOINTMENT OF VIVIENNE COX TO PEARSON PLC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Rio Tinto announces that Vivienne Cox, non executive director of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited, will join Pearson plc as a non executive director with effect from 1 January 2012. 

This announcement is made pursuant to Listing Rule 9.6.14R.
