KENYA AIRWAYS SELECTS ROLLS-ROYCE TRENT FOR BOEING 777s
Rolls-Royce announced today (Monday 22 July) that Kenya Airways had chosen its
Trent 800 engine for three Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. The value of the engine
business is around $100 million. Deliveries begin in May 2004.
Isaac Omolo Okero, Chairman of Kenya Airways, Steve Clarke, Technical Director
and Charles Cuddington, Managing Director - Airlines, Rolls-Royce, signed the
contract at the Farnborough Air Show.
Mr Omolo Okero said, 'The recent announcement of our selection of the Boeing
B777-200ER has completed our medium term fleet plans and today's announcement
marks a major step towards delivery of those aircraft. We are delighted to be,
once again, working with Rolls-Royce, whose name is synonymous with excellence
in Engineering, as we strive for excellence in our business activities'.
Steve Clarke said that after a thorough evaluation process and a close fought
competition, the Trent had emerged a clear winner both commercially, and
technically. 'The engine's performance in hot and high conditions was certainly
key to the outcome,' he added.
Charles Cuddington said: 'We are proud to be part of Kenya Airways' exciting
fleet plans for its long-haul services. This decision underlines its reputation
as an ambitious, forward-looking airline delivering a world-class standard of
travel.'
The 92,000lb thrust Trent 892s will power the extended-range 777s on
international routes from the airline's main hub in Nairobi.
Kenya Airways becomes the 12th customer for the Boeing 777 - Trent combination
and the first in Africa. The Trent 800 has a leading 44 per cent share of firm
and option engine business on the 777 and has accumulated over three million
programme hours since entering service in 1996.
Voted 'African Airline of the Year' for the past three years, Kenya Airways is
currently celebrating its Silver Jubilee, having been incorporated in 1977.
Links with Rolls-Royce began with Dart engines for Fokker F27s, moving more
recently to the RB211-535 on Boeing 757s.
