ROLLS-ROYCE WINS $80M TRENT ORDER FROM AMERICAN AIRLINES
Rolls-Royce has won engine orders worth around $80 million from American
Airlines who will exercise rights to purchase three additional
Boeing 777-200IGW aircraft, powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent 800. The three
aircraft will be delivered in the first half of 2001, bringing the total
number of Boeing 777s ordered by American Airlines to 37.
American Airlines' first 777 went into service in March this year and it
currently operates 10 of the aircraft. Delivery of the remaining 27 aircraft
is scheduled to take place between 1999 and 2001.
Don Carty, American Airlines Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said: 'The
popularity of the 777 with our customers and flight crews, and the outstanding
performance of the aircraft we have experienced so far led us to a very easy
decision to expand the 777 fleet. These are terrific airplanes, and our hope
is to continue to expand the fleet beyond 37 as growth and market
opportunities present themselves.'
John Cheffins, Managing Director, Airlines, Rolls-Royce said: 'We are
extremely pleased to see one of our largest customers show continuing
confidence in the Trent 800-powered 777 programme. The Trent family of engines
is the market leader for the new generation of wide-body aircraft.'
The latest order comes as American Airlines announced plans to introduce 777
service on several existing routes in 2000, including Los Angeles-London
Heathrow, New York Kennedy-London Heathrow, Miami-Buenos Aires and New York
Kennedy-Buenos Aires.
The relationship between Rolls-Royce and American Airlines was further
strengthened last year when a joint venture engine repair company, Texas Aero
Engine Services L.L.C., began operations on Trent 800, RB211-535 and Tay 650
engines.
