SINGAPORE AIRLINES EXPANDS TRENT- POWERED BOEING 777 FLEET
Singapore Airlines (SIA) has selected Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines to power
up to 20 additional Boeing 777 airliners. The value of the order to
Rolls-Royce is around US$560 million.
SIA had previously placed firm and option orders for up to 61 Trent-powered
Boeing 777 twinjets of which 18 are already in service. A further 12 aircraft
will be delivered this year.
John Cheffins, President - Civil Aerospace, Rolls-Royce, said the announcement
marked the latest phase of an important and growing relationship. 'This
follow-on order demonstrates the airline's confidence in their Trent 800s,
which have operated impeccably since entry into service in 1997. SIA's
experience of the Trent 800 was also a major factor in its subsequent
selection of two other members of the engine family.'
Last October SIA became launch customer for the Airbus Industrie A380 with an
order for 10 firm and 15 option aircraft to be powered by the Trent 900. The
carrier has also ordered up to 10 Airbus A340-500 airliners, for which the
Trent 500 is the sole powerplant.
Rolls-Royce, through its partnerships with SIA Engineering Company (a
majority-owned subsidiary of the airline) is also involved in the maintenance
of SIA's Trent-powered fleet. The Trent engine maintenance joint venture,
Singapore Aero Engine Services Ltd. (SAESL) will open next year. The partners
are also responsible for the component repair joint venture, International
Engine Component Overhaul (IECO), established in 1998.

* Trent 800 engines powering the Boeing 777 have accumulated 1.6 million
