ROLLS-ROYCE WINS UP TO $340 MILLION IN NEW BUSINESS
FROM AMERICAN AIRLINES
Rolls-Royce today announced new business valued at up to $340 million
resulting from American Airlines' order for an additional 20 firm and three
option Rolls-Royce RB211-535-powered Boeing 757s.
The order brings American Airlines' Rolls-Royce-powered 757 fleet in service
and on firm order to 122 aircraft, the largest fleet worldwide. Deliveries
for this new order are scheduled to begin in May, 2001, and will continue at a
rate of two per month.
'This latest order builds on our long-term relationship with an extremely
important customer,' said David Whetton, Executive Vice President -
Commercial. 'The Rolls-Royce-powered Boeing 757 is the quietest airliner in its
class, and offers operators a combination of high inflight reliability and a low
shop visit rate.'
Today, Rolls-Royce has a leading position with American Airlines, one of the
world's largest airlines. Its fleet, including its sister company, American
Eagle, comprises 359 Rolls-Royce powered aircraft in service or on firm order,
with engines ranging in thrust from 7,000lb to 92,000lb on five aircraft
applications.
Rolls-Royce and American Airlines have also formed a joint venture engine
repair company, Texas Aero Engine Services L.L.C., to service Rolls-Royce
Trent 800, RB211-535 and Tay 650 engines. The company, based at Alliance
Airport, Fort Worth, Texas, began operations in April 1998.
Earlier this year, American Airlines marked its first anniversary of
successful service with the Rolls-Royce Trent 800-powered Boeing 777-200. The
airline also uses Rolls-Royce Tay 650 engines on its Fokker 100 aircraft, while
its sister company American Eagle operates Rolls-Royce AE 3007-powered Embraer
ERJ 145s and 135s.
This latest contract brings the value of new business announced by Rolls-Royce
plc this year to more than four and a half billion dollars.
