SCOTTISH AND SOUTHERN ENERGY PLC

ALLOCATION OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS' RESPONSIBILITIES

SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc) is undertaking a re-allocation of Board-level responsibilities amongst its Executive Directors.

Alistair Phillips-Davies will become Generation and Supply Director, responsible for SSE's generation, supply and other market-based activities.

Gregor Alexander, Finance Director, will also take on responsibility for other group services, including human resources, IT and procurement.

Ian Marchant, Chief Executive, will take on responsibility for energy networks.

Colin Hood, Chief Operating Officer, will complete the re-structuring of SSE's large capital projects set out in the half-year results in November before stepping down from the Board next year, on a date to be set later.  Ian Marchant will then take on Board-level responsibility for major projects.

To support the Executive Directors, a new Management Board is being created to deliver the strategy and decisions agreed by the main board and to lead operational management of SSE's businesses.

Its membership will comprise the Executive Directors and six other senior executives: David Franklin, Managing Director, Energy Portfolio Management; Rob McDonald, Managing Director, Regulation and Strategy; Jim McPhillimy, Managing Director, Group Services; Mark Mathieson, Managing Director, Networks; Paul Smith, Managing Director, Generation; and Alan Young, Managing Director, Corporate Affairs.

John Morea, Chief Executive, Scotia Gas Networks will also attend meetings of the Management Board.

The members of the Management Board comprise SSE's list of persons discharging managerial responsibilities under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000:

Lord Smith of Kelvin, Chairman of SSE, said:

"SSE is continually evolving and it now makes sense for one Executive Director to have responsibility for our integrated Generation and Supply business and other market-based businesses and for one to have responsibility for a range of group services, and this is the model we are adopting.

"Colin Hood has given outstanding service to the UK's energy industry for over 30 years and has been hugely successful in his central leadership role in SSE over the last decade.  Before leaving, he has agreed to complete the re-structuring of SSE's large capital projects which he has led and which is providing such firm foundations for long-term success in this key area."

Colin Hood said:

"I've always been very proud to work in the energy industry, to work for what I believe is the best company in it and to work with so many excellent and dedicated people.  Our main challenge over the past 18 months has been making sure that our management of large capital projects is on the strongest possible footing.  That's the job I'm now focusing on completing before stepping down from the Board next year."
