("SI" or "the Group")
Surgical Innovations Group plc (AIM: SUN), the designer and manufacturer of innovative medical devices, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Queen's Award for Enterprise, the UK's most prestigious award for outstanding innovation and business performance.
The award, under the Innovation category, acknowledges the technical and clinical excellence achieved with SI's pioneering YelloPort+Plus® , a port access system which acts as a channel into the body, allowing surgeons to carry out delicate keyhole procedures.
The Resposable® YelloPort+Plus® device combines both reusable and disposable elements to offer surgeons and hospitals around the world a cost effective but high quality solution for laparoscopic surgery. The durable, lightweight and ergonomically designed device was developed following close collaboration with surgeons in order to meet their needs and provide the highest levels of patient care.
Commenting on the award Graham Bowland, Managing Director of Surgical Innovations, said: "We are delighted to win such a prestigious award for our contribution to the healthcare industry. SI was one of the first companies to develop flexible but rigid laparoscopic devices and has since gained a worldwide reputation for developing and manufacturing innovative devices. Last year our new laparoscopic training centre was officially opened by Lord Davies of Abersoch, Minister for Trade Investment and Small Business. The Queen's Award is a tribute to the dedication of our employees from design through to production and acknowledges Yorkshire's cutting edge healthcare technologies industry.
"During the last year, we have seen increasing revenues and have invested heavily in the Group's R&D facilities. Our sales agreement with Premier, the US-based Group Purchasing Organisation, will help drive uptake of our products in this highly lucrative market and will contribute further to the Group's international growth prospects. With the number of laparoscopic procedures and the need for innovative tools increasing globally, we look forward to the positive impact we expect that this award will have on the business."
The awards are given each year by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on her birthday, 21 April, on the advice of the Prime Minister, assisted by an Advisory Committee comprising representatives of Government, industry, commerce and the trade unions.
All Surgical Innovations' products are designed and manufactured in-house. Last year the Group moved to a new 32,000sq ft headquarters in Leeds, more than tripling the size of its facilities. The Group has also doubled the number of employees and invested in all areas of the business throughout 2009 to meet the challenges of future growth.
