SYMPHONY PLASTIC TECHNOLOGIES PLC
TRADING STATEMENT
Symphony Plastic Technologies plc ('Symphony' or 'the Group'), the AIM listed
degradable plastics company, today reports that sales for the financial year
ended 31 December 2002 will be approximately £4m.(2001: £3.8m). Since the end of
the financial year, sales have increased significantly. Deliveries are now being
made on the contracts awarded last year, worth in excess of £6m, in addition to
the ongoing sales with Symphony's historic customers.
During 2002, Symphony was awarded a number of major contracts including
Somerfield/Kwik Save, Co-operative Retail, Greater Manchester Council,
SuperCentre (Barbados) and Nisa Today's. Deliveries on these contracts were
expected to form a large part of sales for the final quarter of 2002. The
majority of orders were only received during the final few weeks of 2002.
Full deliveries are now being made to Somerfield depots, with Kwik Save expected
to start taking deliveries by the second quarter of 2003. Sales to Co-operative
Retail include deliveries to 39 of their superstores, and plans for deliveries
to further stores are expected to be clarified before the end of the first
quarter. Greater Manchester Council has also started to take full deliveries
from January. Sales to Nisa Today's are projected to build up slowly in early
2003, with final volumes for the year expected to exceed original estimates.
Sales to Barbados so far in 2003 have risen sharply as local trade finance
arrangements are now in place. This improved trading performance is expected to
continue throughout the year.
We are pursuing a number of opportunities both in the UK and overseas. With the
continuing growth in environmental initiatives being taken by many commercial
and other organisations, Symphony believes it is in a strong position to take
full advantage of the current climate. Sales opportunities continue to come to
fruition including the supply of degradable retail refuse sacks (in addition to
carrier bags) to Somerfield and orders to supply degradable refuse sacks and bin
liners to a major UK hospital group.
