Award of airport in Costa Rica
TBI, the international airport owner and operator, announces through its
subsidiary, Airport Group International (AGI), that Consorcio AGI has
officially been awarded the 20-year management contract for Juan Santamaria
International Airport (AIJS) in Costa Rica. This is a follow-up to the
Government's initial announcement of Consorcio AGI as the successful bidder on
July 2, 1999.
TBI is one of the world's leading airport managers and operators, and AIJS
will benefit from the corporate expertise gained operating, managing and
providing services at TBI's portfolio of more than 32 airports worldwide.
Through AGI, TBI will have a majority equity stake and provide airport
management, operating and development services.
Under the management contract, Consorcio AGI will be responsible for the
management, operation, administration, maintenance, remodelling, development,
and promotion of the Airport. The management contract includes implementation
of the Master Plan, Phases I and II of which will be completed in the first
three years of the contract, and include substantial expansion of the terminal
area, construction of five additional aircraft gates for a total of 11,
airfield work to extend the existing parallel taxiway and rehabilitate the
runway, and roadway work.
The Airport currently serves nearly 2 million domestic and international
passengers. Upon completion of Phase II of the Master Plan in 2001, the
Airport will have the capacity to handle up to 3.8 million annual passengers.
TBI will own 82% of the equity of Consorcio AGI and its projected investment
in the company will be approximately $20 million for the initial phases.
Commenting on the award of the management contract, Keith Brooks, TBI's Chief
Executive said:
'The Juan Santamaria International Airport project represents yet another
important extension of our global airport business, particularly in Latin
America.'
Note: Consorcio AGI is comprised of internationally and nationally recognized
