Transense Technologies extends Licensing Agreement with Honeywell
Transense Surface Acoustic Wave Technology to be used in Honeywell Sensors for
new Applications
Transense Technologies plc ('Transense') today announces that it has signed an
agreement with Honeywell International Inc. ('Honeywell') to extend the licensed
use by Honeywell of the company's surface acoustic wave ('SAW') technology to
non-automotive pressure sensing applications.
'The more Transense and Honeywell collaborate, the more potential applications
for our surface acoustic wave technology come to light,' said James Perry, chief
executive officer of Transense. 'Our initial efforts to bring the technology to
the automotive industry for tire pressure monitoring and torque sensor
applications have been met with success. Now, we are expanding our joint effort
into additional non-automotive pressure segments where Honeywell already has a
presence'.
The world market for industrial sensors is estimated to be worth $4 billion a
year and is growing at the rate of 5.8% compound per annum.
SAW technology is a passive technology that reflects a radio signal from a
battery-less sensor back to a remote reader. Utilizing Transense's SAW
technology, Honeywell developed a pressure and temperature sensor for use in the
recently announced Michelin eTireII tyre pressure monitoring system, designed to
help truck fleet managers accurately monitor tyre pressure and temperature for
improved fuel efficiency, safety and extended tyre life.
'There are many potential applications for SAW technology, and we look forward
to working with Transense to continue exploring opportunities to bring value to
new industries,' said Billal Hammoud, global director of Honeywell Sensing &
Control's emerging electronic sensing business.
SAW technology also is used in Honeywell torque sensors which will be found in
automotive engines, transmissions and driveline and chassis designs to improve
vehicle safety, performance and economy.
