Transense Signs Worldwide Manufacturing Licence with
Temex Microsonics for Volume Production of SAW Sensors
Transense Technologies plc ('Transense'), a developer and licensor of wireless
sensor technology for the automotive industry, is pleased to announce that it
has signed a worldwide manufacturing licence with Temex Microsonics ('Temex'), a
division of the French Tekelec Group. The licence covers the manufacture and
sale of Surface Acoustic Wave devices ('SAWs') utilising the Company's patented
technology for use in tyre pressure monitoring systems ('TPMS').
Under the terms of the licence, Transense will receive a royalty on the sale of
all SAW devices for TPMS incorporating the Company's patented technology and
intellectual property rights.
Temex is the world's third largest producer of SAW-based RF and microwave
components, following its recent acquisition of Thales Microsonics, a division
of the French Thales defence electronics group (formerly known as Thomson-CSF).
Thales was initially granted a restricted, interim licence last August to supply
the initial requirements for pressure SAW devices to one of Transense's key tyre
pressure licensees, who as part of its final product verification has ordered
small volumes of Transense's patented tyre pressure monitoring devices from
Thales.
Jim Perry, Chief Executive Officer of Transense Technologies plc, said last
night:
'I am delighted that, after many months of negotiations, we have been able to
sign this licence agreement with Temex. The merger between Temex and Thales
Microsonics who, at one stage were both negotiating licence agreements with us,
caused a major part of the delay.
'This licence means that we now have two major world-class manufacturers of the
pressure SAW devices, which are core to our technology. Last October we
announced that TAI-SAW, a Taiwan-based company, had signed a manufacturing
licence with us for TPMS SAWs. These two companies have the capacity and
expertise to meet the huge demand on them for SAW devices for the mobile phone
industry and I feel confident in saying that, between them, they should be able
to satisfy the demand for the very large numbers of SAW devices that will be
required for our tyre pressure and temperature measurement systems for the
automotive industry.'
Jean-Pierre Euvrard, President of Temex, added last night:
'We are very excited by the new opportunities opened by this licence. It is a
strategic move for us to achieve a balance between our main existing market, the
Telecoms Industry, and a new area, Automotive Equipment, which brings
fast-growing new applications for our electronic components.'
