TT electronics plc
TT electronics acquires further new technologies
TT electronics plc, a world leader in sensor and electronic component
technology, is pleased to announce the acquisition of the rights to two
important technologies to support future growth and expansion within the global
electronics market.
TT electronics has acquired exclusive ownership of the relevant patents for DAPS
(digital angular position sensing) technology, a capacitive encoder technology
for use in both automotive and non- automotive markets. The patents have been
developed by FE Technical Services Inc. ('FETS'), a US based engineering team
focused on building an intellectual property portfolio. The technology is under
development by TT electronics automotive sensing specialists for an electrical
steering system application in the Far Eastern automotive market.
TT electronics has also acquired the exclusive right to develop its Autopad(R)
position sensing technology for fuel level sensing applications and, as a
result, now owns the exclusive rights to Autopad(R) for all automotive
applications worldwide. Autopad(R) provides highly accurate measurement of fuel
level and therefore consumption. Opportunities for this application exist in
many areas of the automotive and heavy goods vehicle markets.
The purchase consideration for the combined rights is £0.5m, together with the
payment of future royalties.
Commenting on the acquisition, Chief Executive, Neil Rodgers said,
'These are two important developments for TT electronics in our drive to secure
new technologies to support growth in our global markets. The acquisition of the
rights to DAPS gives us access to a complementary range of sensing technologies
and strengthens our current portfolio of automotive sensors. Fuel level sensing
gives us further opportunities to develop Autopad(R) for new applications.'

NOTES TO EDITORS
DAPS
FETS is the exclusive owner of US, European and Chinese patents covering a
unique capacitive encoding technique that exploits micro controller technology
to create low cost precision sensors with minimum development effort.
DAPS (digital angular position sensing) technology can be applied to a variety
of position sensing applications in both automotive and non automotive markets.
The initial development programmes have concentrated on providing a position
sensing function to existing torque sensors for automotive steering systems.
DAPS complements TT electronics' leading-edge Autopad(R) product range very
well. DAPS provides slightly shorter development cycles, particularly in
applications with simpler geometric requirements than those typically served by
Autopad(R). Having both technologies in the 'design toolkit' will allow TT
electronics to address an extremely wide range of position-sensing applications
and markets.
AUTOPAD(R)
Autopad(R) is the leading edge inductive sensing technology developed from TT
electronics' acquisition of Sensopad in March 2004. Autopad(R) is currently
being designed in to a complete range of automotive position sensing
applications such as accelerator pedal, chassis height, electronic throttle
control, brake wear and steering torque and position.
In 2004 TT electronics purchased the rights to use Autopad(R) in the automotive
market in all applications except fuel level measurement.
Acquisition of the rights to develop Autopad(R) level measurement sensors gives
TT electronics the rights to market Autopad(R) in all automotive applications
worldwide.
